Greggs is charging a premium for mince pies in some stores. Shops our team visited in Doncaster, Middlesbrough, Glasgow and Tiverton, Devon, charge 65p each. But cafés in London are asking 80p for the same treat – that’s a 23% hike.

Greggs fan Frank Thompson, 48, from Roehampton, south-west London, raged: “I thought the mince pies were the same uniform price all over. So much for festive cheer – I feel like I’ve had my pocket picked by Greggs.”

It’s not just mince pie munchers who are being hit. Londoners have to cough up extra for sausage rolls, festive and steak bakes and doughnuts too. In much of the UK, sausage rolls cost £1.20. But they are £1.45 in the capital – a 21% increase.

Festive and steak bakes go for £1.95 outside London where they are £2.35 – up 20%. Jam doughnuts are normally 90p but go up 22% in the capital to £1.10.

Sophie Lund-Yates, lead equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, told us: “Greggs isn’t immune to the higher costs of doing business, and squeezing more out of Londoners is one way to recoup some pennies.”

Martyn James, independent consumer champion, said:” Londoners like me might have a bad reputation for being grumpy, but we’re not Grinches - and we deserve to have a Christmas treat for a fair price like everyone else knows.

“As we know from Charles Dickens, us Londoners are short of a few bob at Christmas and deserve a bit of Christmas spirit too.”

Greggs, said: “Greggs uses national pricing in its shops, but there will be a slight difference in pricing in locations where rents are higher than average.”

Last month reports stated the bakery giant had been forced to remove doughnuts from display boxes at an east London store after the sweet treats were targeted by thieves.

And in October it was reported a cafe in Surrey had been branded a ‘laughing stock’ after they opened for just 90 minutes and then closed again due to a shortage of staff.
